Sophomore Daenan Gyimah of the UCLA men's volleyball team has been named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for April 2-9.
Gyimah hit .632 for the week on 38 swings (3.85 kills/set) and added 10 block assists in leading UCLA to four-set win over Stanford and a sweep over No. 2 BYU. The middle blocker, who hit over .600 in each match, led UCLA in kills (15 v. Stanford, 12 v. BYU) and blocks (4 v. Stanford, 6 v. BYU) in both contests. The sophomore is hitting .534 for the season, which leads the nation, and is looking to become the first Bruin to hit for over .500 in a season with at least 300 hitting attempts over the course of a single season (in rally scoring era from 2001 to present). For his effort, he was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Men's Offensive Volleyball Player of the Week.
The Bruins will host Stanford on Saturday, April 14 at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion in an MPSF Quarterfinal match. The winner will move on to the MPSF semifinal round to be held at BYU on Apr. 19. The Cougars will also host the MPSF Championship match on Apr. 21. The winner of the championship match will receive the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The pairings for the NCAA Championship, to be held at UCLA, will be announced on Apr. 22.
This is Gyimah' first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week of the season and the first of his career.
