7 Bruins Earn MPSF MVB Honors

April 12, 2018 | Men's Volleyball

Seven Bruins earned all-league honors as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) announced its men's volleyball award selections on Thursday. Four Bruins were chosen to the first team – senior outside hitter Jake Arnitz, senior opposite Christian Hessenauer, junior setter Micah Ma'a and sophomore middle blocker Daenan Gyimah. Second-team honors went to senior libero/outside hitter JT Hatch and junior outside hitter Dylan Missry. Senior middle blocker Oliver Martin was an honorable mention selection.

Arnitz, who was a first-team honoree for the third straight season, is hitting .307 overall and ranks 12th in the MPSF in kills with a 2.66 average in league matches. This is the first all-league honor for Hessenauer who ranks in the top 15 in the MPSF league statistics in five categories - hitting percentage (.351-3rd), points (4.56-3rd), kills (3.85-3rd), blocks (0.87-12th) and digs (1.54-13th). Ma'a, who was an honorable mention pick last season and a first-teammer in 2016, leads the MPSF in set assists average with a 10.90 mark while the Bruin team tops the league with a .370 hitting percentage. Gyimah, an honorable mention selection last season, paces the MPSF with a .582 mark in league matches and ranks second in blocking average (1.26 per set).

Hatch merited All-MPSF honors for the fourth straight season (honorable mention in 2017 and 2016, second-team in 2015) and is one of the top-ranked passers in the MPSF while ranking 12th in set assists. Missry earned his first All-MPSF honor and ranks among the league leaders in aces (0.29) and digs (1.58). Martin also earned his initial league honors and ranks among the MPSF leaders with a 0.80 blocking average.

No. 2 seed UCLA begins play in the MPSF Tournament this Saturday at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion against No. 7 Stanford in a quarterfinal match. The winner of that contest will advance to the MPSF semifinals to be held on Apr. 19 at top-seeded BYU (3:30 and 6 p.m. PT). The championship match is set for Apr. 21 at 6 p.m. PT and will also be played in Provo, Utah.
