
Big Ninth Inning Lifts No. 18 UCLA over Utah, 6-3

SALT LAKE CITY – Jarron Silva drove in the go-ahead runs with a double in the ninth inning, while Zach Pettway tossed 7.0 innings as the No. 18 UCLA baseball team used a three-run, ninth-inning to defeat Utah, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon from Smith's Ballpark. The Bruins take the series after earning a 16-3 win against the Utes on Friday.
Kyle Molnar (1-0) earned his first win as a Bruin since May 8, 2016 after tossing a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout. Holden Powell (4) picked up his second save during conference play throwing the final inning surrendering just one hit.
Tied 3-3 in the ninth inning, pinch hitter Silva came up to the plate with two runners on and cleared the bases on the first pitch with a double down the left-field line to give the Bruins a two-run advantage. Garrett Mitchell would then plate Silva with a RBI-single up the middle on a 0-2 pitch for the 6-3 lead. Mitchell finished the day 3-for-4 and also scored a run.
UCLA tied the game in the top of the eighth inning when Jeremy Ydens hit a two-out single to right field to bring home Ryan Kreidler from second base for its first run since the second inning.
Utah scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning but the Bruins took their first lead in the second inning when Daniel Amaral hit a two-run single up the middle to bring home Michael Toglia and Jack Stronach who led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
The Utes regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning as they scored a pair of runs with two outs on base hits by Oliver Dunn and Rykker Tom for the 3-2 advantage.
Pettway tossed 7.0 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts for the no-decision, while Utah starter Tanner Thomas threw 5.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Trenton Stoltz (1-2) suffered the loss allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings in relief.
UCLA (21-9, 10-4) scored six runs on 11 hits with one error, while Utah (9-24, 4-7) ended the game with three runs on six hits with no errors.
The series finale between UCLA and Utah will take place on Sunday at noon PT from Smith's Ballpark.
