
No. 18 UCLA Sweeps Utah with 12-4 Win

SALT LAKE CITY โ Jack Stronach collected two base hits and three RBIs, while Garrett Mitchell also drove in three runs and scored twice as the No. 18 UCLA baseball team earned the series sweep of Utah with a 12-4 win on Sunday from Smith's Ballpark. With the three wins this weekend, the Bruins improve to 11-4 in conference play.
Offensively, the Bruins were also led by Jeremy Ydens with three base hits and two runs scored and Michael Toglia registered two base hits and also scored twice. UCLA drew six walks and four hit by pitches against the Utah pitching staff.
Kyle Mora (3-1) earned the win throwing 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, while Jon Olsen started for the Bruins throwing 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
UCLA jumped out to an early lead after a five-run first inning. Toglia brought home the first run of the game by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by Stronach plating Kevin Kendall with a sacrifice fly to center field. Mitchell scored a run with a groundball to the shortstop and then stole second base allowing Toglia to cross home. Ryan Kreidler capped off the inning with a RBI-double to right-center field for the 5-0 advantage.
The Bruins added one more run in the second inning when Stronach scored Ydens with another sacrifice fly, this time to left field.
Utah got on the board in the third inning with two runs as Oliver Dunn lifted a fly ball to left for a sacrifice fly and Erick Migueles hit a RBI-single through the right side to make the score 6-2.
UCLA plated two more runs with Stronach's third sacrifice fly of the game in the fourth inning, followed by Kendall lifting a fly ball to left field to bring in Kreidler in the fifth inning to go up 8-2.
The Utes scored a run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bruins regained their six-run lead when Mitchell picked up his second RBI of the game with a ground ball to second base as Chase Strumpf scored on the play for a 9-3 score.
The Bruins scored another three runs in the eighth inning highlighted by RBI-singles by Mitchell and Daniel Rosica for their final runs of the game.
Utah's Brett Brocoff (2-5) suffered the loss allowing six runs on five hits in just 1.0 innings of work.
UCLA (22-9, 11-4) scored 12 runs on 15 hits with two errors, while Utah (9-25, 4-8) finished the game with four runs on nine hits with one error.
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium next week for a four-game homestand starting with UC Irvine on Tuesday at 6 p.m. PT before hosting crosstown rival USC over the weekend for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. PT.
