No. 15 UCLA Drops Midweek Game to UC Irvine, 8-1

LOS ANGELES – Chase Strumpf collected three base hits and a walk, while Will McInerny drove in a run as the No. 15 UCLA baseball team fell to UC Irvine, 8-1, in a midweek contest on Tuesday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCI's Jake Lachermann (2-0) earned the win tossing 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen scattering four hits, while starter Sean Spraling allowed one run on six hits in 3.0 innings. Jack Ralston (0-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs in one inning of work. UCLA starter Ryan Garcia allowed one run on three hits in 3.2 innings on the mound.
UC Irvine scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but UCLA tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when McInerny hit a two-out single up the middle to bring around Garrett Mitchell from second base to make the score 1-1.
The Anteaters pushed across three more runs in the fifth inning for a 4-1 advantage when Konnor Zickefoose hit a RBI-single to center field followed by the next batter, Cole Kreuter, hitting a two-run home run to left field.
UCI would pushed its lead to 8-1 with a four-run ninth inning as Zickefoose and Parker Coss each hit two-run doubles.
UCLA (22-10) scored one run on 10 hits with no errors, while UC Irvine (21-14) finished the game with eight runs on 11 hits with one error.
The Bruins will return to Pac-12 play this weekend when it hosts crosstown rival USC for a three-game series starting on Friday at 7 p.m. PT. Each game of the series will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
Game Notes: Chase Strumpf recorded three hits for the third time this season … Strumpf and Jeremy Ydens are now tied for the team lead with 11 multi-hit games … Will McInerny recorded his fifth RBI this season … Garrett Mitchell has recorded multiple hits in two of the last three games … Michael Townsend made his first career appearance for the Bruins.
