April 14, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The 15th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team finished off an undefeated weekend and extended its winning streak to eight against Pac-12 teams after dominating unranked Arizona 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
UCLA, which has now won seven straight overall, saw its record improve to 16-4, 8-1. Across all singles and doubles contests on Saturday, the Bruins combined to drop just one set. UCLA went an undefeated 6-0 combined in games for all finished matchups. The visiting Wildcats dropped to 9-14, 0-9.
"I definitely saw things implemented on the court today that we've been working on in practice, so that's definitely exciting," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "It's good to keep going, and keep getting better, and keep building. It was important for us to get the win, but it was also important for us to challenge ourselves to stay disciplined, because we'll need that discipline in our two matches next week."
The Bruins ripped past the Wildcats in doubles play, with Jada Hart and Terri Fleming sweeping Mary Lewis and Marie Van Aelst on court one while Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield dropped just one game in a point-clinching decision over Devin Chypyha and Camila Wesbrooks on court two.
UCLA was equally unstoppable once singles began, as the Bruins pulled off set one victories on all six courts.
Junior Gabby Andrews was the first to finish off her opponent, earning a 6-0, 6-1 decision on court six to put UCLA up 2-0.
After a solid 6-2 win in the first set, Ena Shibahara hit her stride in game two and won six of seven games to give the Bruins a stranglehold 3-0 lead. Not long after, sophomore Jada Hart finished off a 6-3, 6-3 decision on court two over Lewis to clinch the win for UCLA.
Of the three unfinished matchups, two Bruins – Terri Fleming and Abi Altick – led in their second sets after winning the first.
UCLA wraps up regular season play next week, traveling to Pepperdine on Wednesday afternoon before hosting USC on Saturday at LATC in the regular season finale.
