MVB moves on to MPSF Championship Match

No. 2 seed UCLA defeated No. 4 seed Concordia, Irvine in four sets in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) semifinal match held in Provo, Utah on Thursday behind a season-high 15 kills from Jake Arnitz. Scores of the match were 26-28, 25-21, 26-24, 25-18. Arnitz also recorded a season-best six blocks in the victory. Daenan Gyimah tied his career-best with 20.5 points on 16 kills, an ace and six blocks.
The Bruins will advance to Saturday's MPSF Championship to play BYU a winner in straight sets over No. 6 seed USC in the second semifinal. The MPSF Champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships to be held in Pauley Pavilion. The NCAA men's volleyball bracket announcement will be streamed on Sunday morning on www.ncaa.com.

In set one, the Bruins went down 2-6 and coach John Speraw signaled for a quick timeout. UCLA closed to 6-7 after a Gyimah kill, but CUI spurted out to a 7-12 advantage and forced another timeout call from the Bruin bench. UCLA battled back to make it 13-14 on another Gyimah kill and then evened the score at 17-all on an Oliver Martin/Christian Hessenauer/Arnitz block. The Bruins went up 22-20 after kills by Hessenauer and Dylan Missry and led 24-21 following a Micah Ma'a spike. However, Concordia answered with three straight points to make it 24-each. The Bruins then saved two set points, but CUI put a kill and block together for a 26-28 win. UCLA hit .188 for the set with eight attack errors.
In the second set, Concordia was the first team to separate, grabbing a 7-9 lead. After the Eagles led 10-13, UCLA responded with three straight and tied the score at 13 on a Hessenauer kill. The next two points went to CUI, but the Bruins answered with a 6-0 run for a 19-15 edge. Concordia came right back to even the score at 20-all. The Bruins then used an Arnitz kill for a 22-20 gap and owned a 24-21 lead after a Missry/Gyimah block. A Missry spike ended the set at 25-21. UCLA hit at a .367 clip.
In set three, CUI took a 5-7 lead before UCLA came back to tie the score at 9-all. The Eagles regained the lead and moved out to a 13-16 advantage. UCLA rallied to level the score at 18-all after a kill by Hessenauer. After going down 19-21, the Bruins ran off three straight points on a service error, a Martin/Ma'a block, and an Arnitz kill to take a 22-21 lead. CUI came back to tie the score at 23 and 24 before a Hessenauer kill and a Gyimah block ended the set at 26-24. UCLA hit .480 for the frame.
In the fourth set, CUI again took the early edge and led 7-9. Another 6-0 Bruin run followed and UCLA led 13-9 after a Ma'a ace. An Arnitz kill made it 16-13 and UCLA led 18-15 after a Hessenauer swing. A kill by Gyimah triggered a 4-0 run for a 22-16 margin. The sophomore middle blocker then closed out the match with another kill and an ace for a 25-18 win.
UCLA outhit the Eagles .343 to .260 for the contest and won the battle at the nets 12.0 total team blocks to 4.0. The Bruins had three aces and CUI registered two. Gyimah hit .571 for his 16 kills, while Arnitz was at .414. Missry added nine kills while hitting .444. Ma'a added 10 digs and three blocks to his 45 set assists.
