#2 UCLA Outlasts Oregon, Advances to Pac-12 Semis

April 26, 2018 | Women's Tennis

OJAI, Calif. โ€“ The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team outlasted #7 seed Oregon for a 4-3 win in Thursday's Pac-12 Quarterfinals at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

By virtue of the win, the Bruins' 10th in a row, UCLA (19-4) will face #3 seed Arizona State on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Bruins topped the Sun Devils 4-0 on Apr. 13 at Los Angeles Tennis Center in the lone matchup between the two during the regular season.

The Ducks, who bested Utah in the opening round of the tournament, dropped to 15-9ย on the year.

After UCLA won the doubles point, Oregon countered to win three of the first five singles decisions, leaving the outcome of the contest in the hands of junior Ayan Broomfield on court five.

Broomfield, who won a tiebreaker to claim the first set, had just as tough a road in the second, with she and opponent Julia Eshet battling to a 4-4 tie through the first eight games.

Off that 4-4 tie, Broomfield was able to break Eshet's serve to go up 5-4. Serving herself into a 40-30 lead, the Toronto native converted on her first match point, drilling a backhand winner past an approaching Eshet to clinch the victory.

The Bruins built an early lead in Thursday's contest, winning on courts two and three in doubles to claim the doubles point for the 17th time in the last 18 matches.

Broomfield was a key figure in the doubles portion of the match as well, teaming up with partner Gabby Andrews for a quick 6-1 win on court two. Alaina Miller and Ena Shibahara then edged Julia Lilien/Paiton Wagner on court three 6-4 to finish off the doubles win.

Playing on court one, Shibahara was the first to defeat her opponent, topping Alyssa Tobita 6-4, 6-2 to put the Bruins up 2-0.

That two-point lead quickly evaporated for UCLA as the Ducks captured victories on court two and court three in rapid succession, to knot the score back up at 2-2.

UCLA and Oregon traded wins on courts four and six, with Miller coming out on top 6-1, 7-6 on six to run her unbeaten streak in singles to 13 matches.

However, the Ducks punched back with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph on court four to set up Broomfield's heroics.
