
No. 9 UCLA Earns Series Sweep at Cal Poly, 6-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. โ Chase Strumpf hit a home run and scored twice, while Garrett Mitchell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the No. 9 UCLA baseball team swept Cal Poly on Sunday with a 6-4 win from Baggett Stadium. The Bruins have swept its last three weekend series and has now won seven-straight games.
Ryan Garcia (5-0) earned the win striking out eight batters over 5.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on three hits. Holden Powell (6) collected his second save of the weekend throwing the final inning allowing one run.
Tied 3-3 in the fifth inning, the Bruins scored the go-ahead run when Jeremy Ydens led off the inning with a single to right field and later scored on a ground ball to third base off the bat of Strumpf for the 4-3 lead. UCLA scored the next inning as Daniel Rosica dropped down a bunt towards the third-base side to drive in Daniel Amaral.
UCLA regained its three-run advantage in the seventh inning on a solo home run to straight-away center field off the bat of Strumpf.
UCLA jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. The Bruins loaded the bases and scored the first run on an infield single by Amaral followed by Mitchell dropping a two-run single into left field for a 3-0 lead.
Cal Poly tied the game in the bottom of the second inning with a three-run frame as it capitalized on a pair of Bruin errors and Scott Ogrin hit a RBI-double.
Cal Poly's Michael Clark (3-4) allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 5.0 innings in the start with eight strikeouts and four walks.
UCLA used five relief pitchers as Garrett Barker, Jack Ralston, Nick Scheidler and Kyle Mora combined to throw 3.0 scoreless relief innings scattering four hits with two strikeouts.
UCLA (29-10) scored six runs on nine hits with two errors, while Cal Poly (19-23) finished the game with four runs on seven hits with two errors.
UCLA will continue its seven-game road swing next week when it travels to UC Irvine on Tuesday for a midweek contest before heading to Tucson for a three-game Pac-12 series at Arizona beginning on Thursday, May 3 at 6 p.m. PT. All three games of the weekend series will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
