No. 8 UCLA Shuts Out UC Irvine, 12-0

IRVINE, Calif. – Jake Pries drove in five runs with a grand slam, while Daniel Amaral Daniel Amaral collected three RBIs on a double and a triple as the No. 8 UCLA baseball team shut out UC Irvine, 12-0, on Tuesday night from Cicerone Field. With the win, the Bruins extend their winning streak to eight games.

The Bruins pitching staff registered its third shutout of the season with Nick Scheidler (1-0) earning the win tossing 2.0 shutout innings in relief recording all six outs on strikeouts. Starter Jack Ralston threw 4.0 scoreless innings scattering five hits with one strikeout.

Offensively, the Bruins were also led by Michael Toglia, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Chase Strumpf finished with two hits and scored twice.

Leading 5-0 in the fourth inning, UCLA put up five runs in the frame highlighted by Pries hitting a grand slam on a line drive off the scoreboard in left field to grab a 10-run advantage.

UCLA jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as the Bruins loaded the bases for Toglia who hit a RBI-single through the right side of the infield followed by Amaral bringing in Kevin Kendall with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Bruins tacked on three more runs in the third inning to grab a 5-0 lead. Pries started the scoring with a single to left field to bring home Strumpf who led off the frame with a double. Amaral would then hit a RBI-double to the gap in right-center field and scored on a Garrett Mitchell single to right field for the fifth-straight base hit in the inning by the Bruins.

UCLA used five pitchers to record the shutout as Garrett Barker, Michael Townsend and Nathan Hadley threw the final three innings surrendering just one hit and striking out three batters. The Bruin pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts against UCI.

Jake Lachemann (2-1) suffered the loss for UC Irvine allowing five runs on five hits with two walks in 2.1 innings of work in his second start of the year.

UCLA (30-10) scored 12 runs on 15 hits with no errors, while UC Irvine (25-18) finished the game with nine hits and two errors.

The Bruins will complete its seven-game road swing over the weekend when they head to Tucson for a three-game Pac-12 series at Arizona beginning on Thursday, May 3 at 6 p.m. PT. All three games of the weekend series will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
