No. 8 UCLA Drops Pitcher’s Duel at Arizona, 2-0

May 03, 2018 | Baseball

TUCSON, Ariz. – Jeremy Ydens went 2-for-4 with a double, while Jake Bird tossed a complete game as the No. 8 UCLA baseball team dropped the series opener at Arizona, 2-0 on Thursday night from Hi-Corbett Field. The loss snaps an eight-game winning streak for the Bruins.

Bird (5-3) suffered the loss allowing two runs on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work with one strikeout. Cody Deason (5-4) earned the win setting a career-high with 11 strikeouts in his first career complete game scattering four hits for the shutout.

Trailing by two in the ninth inning, the Bruins looked to extend the game with a rally as Michael Toglia walked and Jack Stronach singled to left field. However, the Wildcats were able to get a fly out to right field and a ground out to the second baseman for the final out of the game.

After four scoreless innings to begin the game, Arizona scored the first run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run to straight-away center field by Nick Quintana. The Wildcats picked up another run in the sixth inning when Alfonso Rivas crossed home on a wild pitch.

UCLA had one of its best scoring chances in the sixth inning when Ydens and Chase Strumpf each hit singles to put runners on first and third base with one out, but Deason was able to retire the next two batters to end the threat.

UCLA (30-11, 14-5) recorded five hits with no errors, while Arizona (26-17, 8-11) finished with two runs on seven hits with no errors.

The second game of this three-game Pac-12 series will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. PT from Hi-Corbett Field. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Game Notes: Jake Bird threw his first complete game of his career and set a career-high with 8.0 innings pitched … Bird tossed the second complete game for the Bruins this season … Chase Strumpf is now the team leader with 20 multi-hit games, while Jeremy Ydens recorded his 15th of the season … Strumpf has recorded two or more hits in 10 consecutive games … Strumpf extended his reached base streak to 29 games … Ydens recorded his 13th double of the year … The Bruins were shut out for just the second time this season.
