No. 8 UCLA Falls at Arizona, 3-1

May 04, 2018 | Baseball

TUCSON, Ariz. – Zach Pettway threw seven innings and recorded 10 strikeouts, while Chase Strumpf recorded two base hits as the No. 8 UCLA baseball team fell at Arizona, 3-1, Friday night from Hi-Corbett Field.

Michael Flynn (6-3) earned the win for the Wildcats allowing one run on six hits in 6.2 innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters. Zach Pettway (7-2) suffered the loss surrendering two runs on six hits in seven innings of work and also set a career-high with 10 strikeouts.

Arizona posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Cameron Cannon plated a run with a sacrifice fly to left field followed by Nick Quintana hitting a RBI-single.

UCLA cut the deficit in the top of the fifth inning when pinch hitter Kyle Cuellar hit a single to center field to plate Daniel Amaral from second base to make the score 2-1.

The Bruins looked to tie the game in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with just one out, but Flynn was able to strikeout the next two batters to keep it a one-run game. Jake Pries almost gave the Bruins the lead in the eighth inning with a long fly ball to left field but his hit attempt was caught just in front of the wall.

The Wildcats pushed their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the first two batters of the frame recorded base hits and Cannon crossed home on a wild pitch.

UCLA (30-12, 14-6) scored one run on six hits with no errors, while Arizona (27-17, 9-11) ended the game with three runs on eight hits with no errors.

The series finale between UCLA and Arizona will take place on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT from Hi-Corbett Field. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

Game Notes: UCLA has lost two consecutive games for just the second time this season … Zach Pettway is the first Bruin pitcher to record double-digit strikeouts since Griffin Canning on May 25, 2017 at Oregon … Chase Strumpf has two or more hits in 11 consecutive games … Strumpf extended his reached base streak to 30 games … Kyle Cuellar recorded his 13th RBI of the season.
