Five Bruins earned All-All American honors as The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 28th annual AVCA Division I-II Men's All-America Teams. Two Bruins were chosen to the first team – junior setter Micah Ma'a and sophomore middle blocker Daenan Gyimah. Honorable mention honors went to senior outside hitter Jake Arnitz, senior libero/outside hitter JT Hatch and senior opposite Christian Hessenauer.
Ma'a, who was a first-team selection as a freshman, ranks second in the nation in set assists per game (10.56) and helped UCLA to the second-best team hitting percentage in the NCAA (.350) this season. He was a starter in all 31 matches and also ranks 10th in the nation in aces (0.48).This is Gyimah's first AVCA honors. He leads the nation in hitting percentage (.535) this season and is ranked third in the NCAA in blocks per set (1.22).
Arnitz, who was a second-team honoree the previous two campaigns, has hit over .300 in 15 matches this season and earned first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors. Hatch, who was an honorable mention AVCA All-America as a freshman, played both libero and outside hitter for the Bruins this season. Hessenauer earned his first AVCA honors after leading the team in kills per set (3.40) and points per set (4.12) this year.
The 2018 AVCA selections were made by the AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball All-America Committee consisting of ten coaches from across the nation. The full team selections are listed below.
UCLA begins play in the NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship on Tuesday in an Opening Round match against Harvard, the champion of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. In Tuesday's first NCAA match, two-time defending national champion Ohio State will meet UC Irvine in a contest which begins at 5 p.m. in the Pavilion.
