STANFORD, Calif.ย -- No. 1 UCLA won its 23rd consecutive dualย on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1ย win over No. 5ย Cal Polyย (20-4) in the second match of the Stanford West Coast Classic at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium.
The Bruins, who improved to 28-3 on the season, take on unranked Pacificย (6-8) tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. PTย at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium. The Bruins will also face No. 13 Stanford (13-7) at Noon on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Bruins opened the dual with Cal Polyย with two wins onย the first flight on courts five and six. In exhibition play, sophomoresย Chanti Holroyd andMadi Yeomansย defeated Cal Poly'sย Brayden Gruenewald and Jamie Stiversย in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14ย on court six. Then junior Izzy Carey and freshman Megan Muretย put the Bruins up 1-0 with aย 21-16, 22-20ย win over the Mustangs' Hannah Hubbard and Heather Pembrokeย on court five for their 23rd straight victory.
Cal Poly tied the match at 1-1 in the second flight on courtย four when Macy Gordon and Raeann Greisen defeated UCLA'sย freshman Mac May and senior Elise Zappiaย in two sets, 22-20, 21-15, snapping the tandem's 16-match winning streak. The Bruins regained the lead, 2-1, with a three-set win on court threeย as junior Zana Muno and sophomore Savvy Simo defeated CP's Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden, 21-18, 18-21, 15-10.
The Bruins sealed the win in the final flight on court two when juniorย Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine defeated the Mustangs' Samantha Manley and Emily Sonnyย in straight sets, 21-16, 21-12. Juniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara provided the 4-1 final score with a straight-set win on court one over Cal Poly's Sjea Anderson and Torrey Van Winden, 21-16, 21-19.
