No. 1 UCLA Defeats No. 5 Cal Poly, 4-1

The Bruins run their winning streak to 23 consecutive duals on Saturday afternoon with the win over the Mustangs.

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 1 UCLA won its 23rd consecutive dual on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 win over No. 5 Cal Poly (20-4) in the second match of the Stanford West Coast Classic at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium.

The Bruins, who improved to 28-3 on the season, take on unranked Pacific (6-8) tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. PT at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium. The Bruins will also face No. 13 Stanford (13-7) at Noon on the Pac-12 Networks.

The Bruins opened the dual with Cal Poly with two wins on the first flight on courts five and six. In exhibition play, sophomores Chanti Holroyd andMadi Yeomans defeated Cal Poly's Brayden Gruenewald and Jamie Stivers in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14 on court six. Then junior Izzy Carey and freshman Megan Muret put the Bruins up 1-0 with a 21-16, 22-20 win over the Mustangs' Hannah Hubbard and Heather Pembroke on court five for their 23rd straight victory.

Cal Poly tied the match at 1-1 in the second flight on court four when Macy Gordon and Raeann Greisen defeated UCLA's freshman Mac May and senior Elise Zappia in two sets, 22-20, 21-15, snapping the tandem's 16-match winning streak. The Bruins regained the lead, 2-1, with a three-set win on court three as junior Zana Muno and sophomore Savvy Simo defeated CP's Taylor Nelson and Adlee Van Winden, 21-18, 18-21, 15-10.

The Bruins sealed the win in the final flight on court two when junior Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine defeated the Mustangs' Samantha Manley and Emily Sonny in straight sets, 21-16, 21-12. Juniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara provided the 4-1 final score with a straight-set win on court one over Cal Poly's Sjea Anderson and Torrey Van Winden, 21-16, 21-19.
