No. 11 UCLA Earns Comeback Win at Washington, 7-3

SEATTLE – Michael Toglia hit a three-run home run and Jake Bird tossed 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts as the No. 11 UCLA baseball team earned the win in the series opener at Washington, 7-3, on Friday night from Husky Ballpark. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Bruins.

Bird (6-3) earned the win and improved to 5-2 in league play tossing 6.1 innings allowing three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.

The Bruin offense was also led by Daniel Amaral with two doubles and one run scored, while Chase Strumpf and Jack Stronach each recorded two hits and drove in a run.

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning, UCLA tied the game with one swing of the bat as Toglia hit an opposite field three-run home run over the right-field wall to bring home Jeremy Ydens and Strumpf who reached base on singles to the left side.

The Bruins grabbed their first lead of the game in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases for Daniel Rosica who lifted a deep fly ball to right field to plate Stronach with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3.

UCLA added a run in the seventh inning on a RBI-single to left field by Stronach and then tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning when Strumpf plated Ydens with a sacrifice fly to right field followed by Amaral coming home on a passed ball.

After three scoreless inning to begin the game, Washington got on the board first with three runs in the fourth inning. Jonathan Schiffer started the scoring with a RBI-double to left-center field followed by Braiden Ward dropping in a two-out, two-run single to right field.

Garrett Barker, Nick Scheidler and Kyle Mora combined to throw the final 2.2 innings out of the bullpen without allowing a hit and struck out one batter.

UCLA (31-14, 15-7) scored seven runs on 12 hits with no errors, while Washington (23-21, 13-9) finished the game with three runs on eight hits with no errors.

The second game of this three-game Pac-12 series will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. PT from Husky Ballpark.

Game Notes: UCLA has recorded 10 or more hits in 23 games this season … Michael Toglia hit his 10th home run of the season and is tied for the team lead … Toglia and Chase Strumpf become the first Bruin teammates since 2007 to record double-digit home runs (Cody Decker and Gabe Cohen) … Jake Bird tied a career-high with seven strikeouts … Bird has recorded 12 quality starts in 13 chances this season … Nick Scheidler made his team-leading 31st appearance on the mound … Strumpf has tallied two or more hits in 12 of the last 14 games … Daniel Amaral tallied his 14th multi-hit game of the year, while Jack Stronach collected his ninth and Jake Hirabayashi recorded his eighth.
