UCLA Falls in Extras to Top-Seeded Minnesota, 3-2

MINNEAPOLIS โ Zach Pettway tossed 7.0 innings allowing one run, while Chase Strumpf recorded two doubles as the No. 2 seed UCLA baseball team fell to top-seeded Minnesota, 3-2, in 10 innings on Saturday from the Minneapolis Regional at Siebert Field. The Bruins will face Gonzaga in an elimination game on Sunday beginning at noon PT.
In the 10th inning, Minnesota scored the go-ahead run as Terrin Vavra led off with a single to left field, moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a RBI-double to right field by Micah Coffey.
UCLA jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Michael Toglia drove in Jeremy Ydens with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, but Minnesota tied the game in the next half inning on a solo home run to center field by Alex Boxwell.
The Bruins regained the lead in the second inning as Daniel Amaral led off with a walk and came around to score on a groundball to first base off the bat of Garrett Mitchell to make the score 2-1.
Neither team scored for the next five innings until the Golden Gophers tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth inning. Vavra led off with a double down the left-field line and came around to score on a single to center field by Eli Wilson as Vavra slid home safely just in front of the tag.
Minnesota's Max Meyer (2-2) earned the win throwing the final 3.0 innings surrendering just one hit with six strikeouts, while starter Patrick Fredrickson tossed 6.0 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and five walks with seven strikeouts.
Pettway threw 7.0 innings allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts for the no-decision. Kyle Mora (6-3) suffered the loss allowing two runs on five hits in 3.0 innings in relief.
UCLA (37-20) scored two runs on six hits with one error, while Minnesota (43-13) finished the game with three runs on nine hits with two errors.
Sunday's elimination game against the Zags will be broadcast on ESPN3.
