Five Bruin Rowers to Compete at U23 Championships

July 23, 2018 | Women's Rowing

The UCLA women's rowing program will have five student-athletes – rising seniors Saskia Budgett, Kyra Edwards, Megan Slabbert and Carlisle Wheeler and recent graduate Sophia Denison-Johnston – compete at the upcoming Under 23 World Championships in Poznan, Poland.

The 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships are scheduled to take place from July 25-29 in Poznan, nearly 200 miles to the west of Warsaw, Poland's capital.

Slabbert, Edwards and Budgett will be competing for Great Britain's U23 National Team. Wheeler and Denison-Johnston will be racing for the United States' U23 National Team. Denison-Johnston will be paired with Isabella Garcia-Carmargo of Stanford in the lightweight women's double sculls. Wheeler will compete in the women's 4x.

Last summer, Budgett, Edwards and Wheeler all competed at the Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Budgett and Edwards were part of a Great Britain U23 squad that won the gold medal in the 4x. Budgett competed in the championships race, while Edwards raced in preliminary 4x heats for Great Britain.

All five rising seniors played major roles for UCLA in 2017-18, rowing on either the varsity eight or second varsity eight crews.

In addition, former UCLA standout Marie Jacquet has been competing for the French national team. Jacquet, who raced for France at the U23 Championships in the Netherlands in the summer of 2016, was a two-time All-Pac-12 Conference selection for the Bruins (2016, 2017). Jacquet was a three-time medalist at the Under 23 Championships during her time at UCLA.
