UCLA Closes Non-Conference Play with 3-0 Win at SDSU

SAN DIEGO - No. 8 UCLA finished strong in non-conference play, scoring three goals for the third consecutive game in a 3-0 win at San Diego State on Sunday night.
Once again, all of the Bruin goals were scored by different players - Hailie Mace and Delanie Sheehan each scored their second goals of the year, and center back Karina Rodriguez recorded her first collegiate goal.
UCLA (5-1-1) dominated play against San Diego State (2-6), outshooting the Aztecs, 20-1 and recording 13 corner kicks to San Diego State's two.
Mace was active up top in the first half before dropping back to defense in the second half. In the 12th minute, she sent a shot across the box that seemed headed towards the goal, but it was cleared out by a San Diego State defender.She would not be denied in the 28th minute, however, one-timing an Anika Rodriguez cross past San Diego State goalkeeper Gabby English for her second goal of the year.
Karina Rodriguez netted her first collegiate goal with 45 seconds remaining in the first half. Mace sent a cross into the box that found Rodriguez in front of the goal. Rodriguez fired from 10 yards to double the Bruins' lead just before halftime.
UCLA wasted no time in the second half. Just 27 seconds in, Delanie Sheehan made a nice run down the left sideline, juked a few defenders and then sent a hard-angled shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.
The Bruins could have scored more goals but had three shots hit the woodwork, with Olivia Athens hitting the right post in the 24th minute, Ashley Sanchez doing the same in the 30th, and Sunny Dunphy hitting the crossbar in the 85th.
Junior goalkeeper Teagan Micah earned her third solo shutout of the season, and the win moved her into a tie for fifth on UCLA's career victory list with 37.
UCLA will begin Pac-12 Conference play on Friday, Sept. 22 against Washington State at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The game will kick off at 8pm and will be televised live on Pac-12 Network.
