Women's Soccer Shuts Out Pepperdine, 3-0

After a nearly two-week long road trip, No. 7 UCLA's return to the friendly confines of Wallis Annenberg Stadium resulted in a 3-0 victory over Pepperdine on Friday night.
UCLA (3-1-1) shuffled its lineup, giving redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy her first start, and freshman midfielder Maricarmen Reyes her first start. Senior forward Hailie Mace also made her first start of the year after returning from national team duty. All three played key roles in the Bruin victory, as Brzykcy played 45 shutout minutes, Reyes scored her second career goal, and Mace assisted on the game-winner.
The Bruins got off to a quick start, with Anika Rodriguez and Mace engaging in a give-and-go in the fifth minute. After receiving a flick from Rodriguez, Mace one-timed it back to her teammate, who controlled it and shot past Pepperdine goalkeeper Brielle Preece and an onrushing Waves defender, who tried unsuccessfully to clear the shot off the line.
UCLA doubled its lead in the 58th minute. Ashley Sanchez's superior ball control allowed her to send a nice ball through to Reyes, who sent a shot far post past Preece for her second goal in as many games.
Rodriguez and Sanchez combined in the 84th minute for the game's final goal. Rodriguez made a run and passed off to Sanchez on the right side. Sanchez finished far post for her second goal of the season.
Brzykcy picked up the victory, her first as a Bruin. She and Teagan Micah shared the shutout, UCLA's third this season. Preece had six saves for the Waves, who fell to 1-5 on the year.
UCLA will next play at Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7pm.
