Freshman Phenom Makes History
At the Columbia Challenge on Jan. 26, Guttormsen made history when he cleared 5.71m (18-8.75) on his third attempt, which broke a 41-year-old UCLA indoor record. His mark trumped Mike Tulley's indoor effort of 5.62m (18-5.25) set for the Bruins in 1978. Guttormsen, the second athlete ever to clear 18 feet at the National Pole Vault Summit, also tied Tulley's outdoor mark of 5.71m and set a meet record for the Columbia Challenge.
Wilson Stays Unbeaten in Shot Put
Sophomore Alyssa Wilson remained perfect in the shot put, improving to 3-0 with a first-place finish at the Columbia Challenge. She posted a mark of 17.24m (56-6.75). In the season opener at the Northern Arizona Friday Night Duals, she threw 17.73m (58-2), a lifetime best and the second-best mark in UCLA's indoor history.
Last Meet
In addition to Guttormsen's record-breaking performance in the pole vault, UCLA won three other events at the Columbia Challenge. The Bruin men earned an impressive third-place finish with 79 points, just two points short of second-place Ohio State. On the women's side, UCLA finished eighth with 46 points.
Junior Robert Brandt clocked a career-best time of 7:59.11 to win the 3000m, marking the fourth-fastest time in program history.
Wilson continued her dominance in the shot put, moving to 3-0 on the season when she tossed 17.24m (56-6.75) to win the event, followed by senior Ashlie Blake at 16.89m (55-5).
On the men's side, senior Justin Stafford took home first place in the weight throw for the second time this season, heaving 20.55m (67-5.25). Another senior thrower in Dotun Ogundeji qualified for the men's shot put invitational, where he earned third place at 19.52m (64-0.5) on his last attempt.
In the women's pole vault, Garrett cleared 4.20m (13-9.25) on her last attempt, sealing a second-place finish for the Murrieta, Calif., native.
Senior Michael Burke mustered eight more points for the men in the high jump, clearing 2.14m (7-0.25) to earn second place, while junior Meleni Rodney earned eight points for the women in the 200m dash when she registered a time of 24.05 to take second.
In total, the Bruins boasted 17 top-five finishes.
