CLEARWATER, Fla. - Redshirt junior Rachel Garcia and UCLA alums Ally Carda and Delaney Spaulding were named to the 2019 USA Softball Women's National Team, as announced by USA Softball on Monday.
The trio are a part of the 18-athlete roster that was selected by the Women's National Team Selection Committee following the Selection Trials in Clearwater, Fla. (Jan 2-6). These athletes will compete in select tournaments and invitational events this summer before the final 15-player roster for the 2019 Pan American Games is finalized. The complete National Team schedule will be released at a later date.
Carda will be spending her fifth season in a row with USA Softball, having earned five gold medals, three silvers and one bronze. Last summer, she won gold at the Japan Cup, pitching 3 1/3 innings with a 0.00 earned run average and two strikeouts, and bronze at the International Cup, going 2-for-7 (.286) and pitching in three games. In the 2017 Pan American Championship, Carda went 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA in 13 innings to help the U.S. to a gold medal. She did not allow a run in 8 1/3 innings at the 2017 World Cup of Softball XII, striking out a team-best 14 and allowing just six hits and two walks, earning a silver medal. Carda was a member of the 2016 gold-medal winning Worlds team, throwing 6 1/3 scoreless with 12 strikeouts. She also picked up gold at the 2015 Japan Cup, where she was named the Most Valuable Player after throwing 14 scoreless innings.
Garcia made her second-straight USA Softball Women's National Team. At the 2018 WBSC Women's World Championship, Garcia had a 1.05 earned run average with 13 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings, helping the U.S. win gold and qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She also hit .400 (2-for-5) at the plate with three RBI. Against host Japan, Garcia entered in relief and struck out both batters she faced in 2/3 of an inning, but her biggest moment came at the plate, as she produced a walk-off, RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the U.S. into the gold medal game. Garcia, who also won gold at the 2018 International Cup while posting a 1-0 record, a 1.31 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, was named to the USA Junior Women's National Team in 2015, but did not play due to injury.
Spaulding is making her fourth-straight appearance on the USA Softball Women's National Team roster. She won gold at the 2018 WBSC Women's World Championship to help the U.S. qualify for Tokyo 2020, hitting .308 (8-for-26) with a pair of home runs, nine RBI and nine runs scored. At the '18 International Cup, she also won gold, placing second on the team with three homers and eight RBI, tying for second with seven runs scored and finishing third with a .429 (6-for-14) batting average.
