ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Redshirt sophomore Nate Esparza earned a second-place finish in the shot put, and the UCLA track & field team capped a successful weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Esparza, a product of Pleasanton, Calif., registered a throw of 18.97m (62-3) on his fifth attempt to breeze past third-place finisher Samuel Reid (17.80m) out of Adams State.
In the women's pole vault, redshirt senior Elleyse Garrett cleared 4.11m (13-5.75) on her second try, helping her to a fourth-place finish.
Freshman Sondre Guttormsen, UCLA's indoor record holder for the pole vault, competed in his first collegiate track event on Saturday, reaching the finals of the 60m hurdles, where he posted a time of 8.39 to finish sixth.

UCLA is back in action on Feb. 8-9 in both the Don Kirby Collegiate Elite Invitational and Husky Classic.
