PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Bruins begin the spring portion of their schedule at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament runs from Sunday through Tuesday at the par-71, 6,017-yard layout.
All six Bruins will be participating in the event, with senior Beth Wu, juniors Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi and sophomores Vera Markevich and Patty Tavatanakit representing the starting five, and freshman Phoebe Yue competing as an individual. Sunday's play will be a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. (Yue No. 9, Galdiano No. 10, Wu No. 11, Legaspi No. 12, Tavatanakit No. 13, Markevich No. 14). Monday's play will have traditional tee times at 9 a.m., followed by a Tuesday shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Joining the Bruins in the 16-team field are No. 1 USC, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Alabama, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 9 Arizona, No. 13 Stanford, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 19 Washington, No. 20 Florida State, No. 26 Furman, No. 35 Baylor, No. 42 Colorado, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.
In their four events in the fall, the Bruins won the Golfweek Conference Challenge (Sept. 24-26, -32, 832) and placed second at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate (Sept. 17-19, -26, 838). Without Tavatanakit and Lilia Vu, who has turned pro after advancing through the LPGA Q-Series, UCLA finished eighth at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (Nov. 5-7, +14, 890) and tied for ninth at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 19-21, +22, 874). The Bruins have been under par in seven of their 12 rounds and 22-under overall.
Galdiano has victories in two of her four events, the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the Stanford Intercollegiate. She was under par in all three rounds at the GCC, finishing at 13-under 203, shooting a 2-under 70, a 4-under 68 and a 7-under 65. Galdiano shared medalist honors at Stanford (-8, 205), setting a school record with a 62 (-9) in the second round. She has also tied for 12th at Nanea (E, 219) and tied for 18th at the ANNIKA (-2, 214), posting a pair of under-par rounds in each event.
In her two events this season, Tavatanakit has finished first at the ANNIKA and second at the Golfweek Challenge. The sophomore has been under par in five of her six rounds, posting a 13-under score at the ANNIKA thanks to a second-round, 4-under 68 and a final-round, 9-under 63 to tie a school record. At the Golfweek Challenge, she finished second to Galdiano at 11-under 205, shooting a 4-under 68, a 2-under 70 and a 5-under 67.
Legaspi has three under-par rounds this season, tying for seventh at the Golfweek Challenge (-3, 213) where she opened with a 4-under 68. She also tied for 20th at Stanford (+2, 215), opening with a 4-under 67, tied for 22nd at Nanea (+2, 221) and tied for 45th at the ANNIKA (+6, 222).
Wu has a pair of Top 20 showings, tying for 10th at Nanea (-1, 218) and tying for 15th at the ANNIKA (-3, 213). She opened with a 3-under 70 at Nanea and had a pair of under-par rounds to close the ANNIKA. Wu tied for 40th at the Golfweek Challenge (+11, 227) and tied for 56th at Stanford (+12, 225), shooting one under-par round in both tournaments.
Markevich competed at both the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (T-56, +20, 239) and the Stanford Intercollegiate (T-80, +23, 236), as did Yue, who was 54th at Nanea (+17, 236) and tied for 84th at Stanford (+25, 238).
The Bruins, the defending champions of the Regional Challenge, have won it four times since 2008 (2015, 2013, 2008), with Vu (2018), Bronte Law (2015) and Erynne Lee (2013) earning medalist honors.
