LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA opened the 2019 season with a 5-0 sweep of No. 5/6 Cal Poly (0-1) on Thursday morning at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
The Bruins opened the dual with Cal Poly with two wins on the first flight on courts three and four. Sophomore Mac May and junior Savvy Simo had little trouble with Elenore Johanssen and Jayelin Lombard, winning in straight sets, 21-14, 21-9 on court four. Court three went the distance, with UCLA freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Muno rallying to defeat the Mustangs' Macy Gordon and Vanessa Roscoe, 17-21, 21-17, 15-10.
UCLA clinched the dual on court five when senior Izzy Carey and sophomore Megan Muret defeated Cal Poly's Brayden Gruenewald and Heather Pembroke, 21-16, 21-15.
Seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara posted a straight-set win over CP's Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden, 21-16, 24-22, to give UCLA a 4-0 lead.
Junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil also had to rally to win in three sets over Tiadora Miric and Crissy Jones, 17-21, 21-9, 15-13.
In an exhibition match on court six, UCLA sophomore Lea Monkhouse and junior Madi Yeomans outlasted Cal Poly's Sjea Anderson and Kassandra Wright in three sets, 21-14, 20-22, 18-16.
The Bruins return to action this weekend at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen's Beach on Feb. 23 and 24 in Honolulu, Hawaii. UCLA will open with No. 10/11 Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
