Swim and Dive Heads North for Pac-12 Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The UCLA swimming and diving team, ranked No. 25 in the latest College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) poll, is in the Pacific Northwest this week for the Pac-12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center.

Men's diving will also be part of the four-day event, scheduled to run Wednesday through Saturday. The weekend will wrap with the Pac-12 Swimming Invitational on Sunday.

Friday's and Saturday's finals will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks and streamed on Pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app. The broadcasts will begin at 6:30 p.m. each night. Rich Burk will serve as the play-by-play announcer for both broadcasts, and he will be joined by analysts Amy Van Dyken (Friday and Saturday) and Cynthia Potter (Friday only).

The Championships start on Wednesday with the men's 1M prelims at 2:00 p.m. The women get underway starting at 6:00 p.m. with the finals for the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.

Thursday morning brings the prelims for the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free. Women's 1M diving prelims and finals are set to take place that afternoon, while the evening session (starting at 6:00 p.m.) will consist of finals for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 200 free relay.

A busy Friday starts with morning prelims for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back. The women's 3M prelims are set for the afternoon, and a flurry of finals are set for the evening session: 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3M diving, and 400 medley relay.

The Championships wrap up on Saturday and with finals for the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, women's platform diving, and 400 free relay.

Wednesday outlook: UCLA enters as the No. 7 seed in both relays.  

Thursday outlook: The Bruins have the top two seeds and four of the top-nine in 1-meter diving … Reigning Pac-12 Diver of the Year and No. 2 seed Eloise Belanger will be looking to defend her 1M title from last year, when she scored 324.20 … Maria Polyakova is the top seed in 1M, followed by Traci Shiver (No. 8) and Alice Yanovsky (No. 9) … Sandra Soe has UCLA's best time in the 500 this year at 4:45.23 … Emma Schanz is the highest-seeded Bruin in the 200 IM, with a season-best time of 1:58.28 set at the Georgia Fall Invitational on Nov. 29, 2018 … A crowded 50 free field features three Bruins in the top-20 seeds: Claire Grover (22.44, 10th), Kenisha Liu (22.61, 15th), and Amy Okada (22.82, 18th) … UCLA is the No. 5 seed in the 200 free relay (Claire Grover, Kenisha Liu, Amy Okada, and Maisie Jameson logged a season-best 1:29.10 in that event at USC on Feb. 15).

Friday outlook: Belanger (No. 2) and Polyakova make up two of the top-three seeds in 3M diving … Belanger won the event last year with a score of 369.75 … Polyakova topped the podium in 3M at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships (385.00) … Alice Yanovsky (288.68, seventh) and Traci Shiver (270.23, ninth) are also seeded top10 … Amy Okada is a top-10 seed in the 100 fly after winning that event five times this year and posting an NCAA B Standard time of 52.97 at USC on Feb. 15 … Kenisha Liu is the Bruins' top seed in the 200 free, recording a season-best time of 1:45.89 … Claire Grover is the No. 8 seed in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.77, less than a second behind the top seed … Emma Schanz is the No. 10 seed in the 100 back (53.47) … The Bruins are seeded fifth in the 400 medley relay, the same spot they finished in the 2018 Championships.

Saturday outlook: Soe is one of the top seeds in the mile, as her 16:02.88 seed time is good for fourth ... Lisa Kaunitz (16:58.89, 16th) and Katie Sulkevich (16:59.25, 17th) are both top-20 in the mile … Mara Newman is a top-10 seed in the 200 back, coming in ninth at 1:55.43 … Liu leads the Bruins' contingent in the 100 free, as she's the No. 5 seed at 48.56 … Liu finished fourth last year at Pac-12s in the 100 free with a finals time of 48.30 … That represented UCLA's best individual swimming result of the meet … Emma Schanz is a top-10 seed in the 200 breast (2:10.97), an event she finished fifth in last year at Pac-12s … Amy Okada is the Bruins' top representative in the 200 fly, as she is seeded 10th with a season-best time of 1:56.89 … UCLA is the No. 5 seed in the 400 free relay, the final event of the meet.
