UCLA senior setter Micah Ma'a and junior middle blocker Daenan Gyimah were named Defensive Player of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Monday. The Bruin men's volleyball team captured two big road wins at No. 7 Loyola-Chicago and No. 10 Lewis in action last week to improve their record to 8-2 on the season.
Ma'a averaged 2.13 digs (17 total) and 0.75 blocks per set (six total) in addition to directing the Bruin offense from his setting position. He produced a match-high 10 digs and dished 29 assists against Lewis en route to a double-double. He also served four aces (0.50 A/S) for the week. He had a season-best eight kills in the Loyola win to go with seven digs and 46 set assists. This is the second career MPSF weekly award for Ma'a, first on the defensive side.
Gyimah led the Bruin attack by hitting .614 for the week (30-3-44). He averaged 3.75 kills, 0.88 blocks and 4.25 points per set for the two matches. Gyimah's .739 hitting performance (18-1-23) against Loyola marked the sixth time this season he has hit over .500 in a match. He registered 12 kills while hitting .476 against Lewis. This is the fourth career MPSF weekly award for Gyimah, two each as offensive and defensive honoree.
