The UCLA track & field team finished day one of the outdoor season, making strong showings at the Willie Williams Classic and Baldy Castillo Invitational in Arizona.
While a majority of the Bruins competed in Tucson, the UCLA pole vaulters took part in the Baldy Castillo Invite in Tempe, where Elleyse Garrett secured first place in the event, clearing 4.08m (13-4.5).
At the Willie Williams Classic, Simon Litzell won the javelin in his 2019 debut, posting a mark of 71.24m (233-8) on his third attempt.
In the long jump, Isaiah Holmes got off to a strong start for the outdoor campaign, placing first with a mark of 7.56m (24-9.75), while Matthew DeRoos took third overall (7.19m).
Amongst a group of seasoned veterans, it was the freshman Nyree Brown who stood out in the 400m hurdles, placing third with a time of 1:03.57.
In the 200m dash, Suzie Acolatse (24.37) and Schuyler Moore (24.38) went 3-4.
In her Bruin debut, freshman Lauren McFall placed sixth in the javelin, posting a throw of 41.77m (137-0) on attempt No. 3. She was followed by sophomore teammate Ilaria Casarotto, who took seventh with a toss of 41.39m (135-9).
Lilly Schmidt placed eighth in the 1500m run, tallying 4:41.47.
The shot put saw Christina Chenault make the top 10, taking ninth with an effort of 12.18m (39-11.5).
In the men's 1500m run, Tyler Janes and Munir Kabbara went 2-3, booking times of 3:51.85 and 3:52.73, respectively. Meanwhile, the 5000m watched Chris Morzenti earn third place, logging 14:47.84.
In the men's 200m dash, Leon Powell began his outdoor season with a fourth-place finish, crossing the finish line at the 21.36 mark.
