LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Two Bruins have been named to the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Freshman of the Year Top 25 list, as announced on Thursday, as freshmen Megan Faraimo and Kelli Godin have been named finalists.
Faraimo is second on the team with a 1.18 earned run average, 106 strikeouts and 83 1/3 innings, sporting a 12-2 record. She has limited opponents to a team-low .140 batting average. Faraimo, a five-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week (Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 12, April 1 and April 8), has pitched nine complete games, including six solo shutouts. She has allowed zero or one earned run in 14 of her 17 games, and has seven contests with at least eight strikeouts. Faraimo fanned a career-best 12 against Robert Morris (March 8), as well as 11 versus Cal State Fullerton (March 26) and 10 against Fresno State (Feb. 16). She has a pair of no-hitters, tossing her first versus Fresno State and her second against Colorado State (Feb. 24). Faraimo entered the week third nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.83), seventh in hits allowed per seven innings (3.53), 13th in walks allowed per seven innings (1.01), 17th in ERA and tied for 20th in shutouts.
Godin leads the Bruins with a .487 batting average, a .529 on base percentage, 21 stolen bases and six sacrifice hits, while ranking third with 33 runs scored. Godin stole her first 18 bases before getting caught, which marked the most successful stolen bases to start a UCLA career. She has stolen three bases twice in a game this season to tie a single-game record. Godin, who has been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week twice (March 19 and March 25), has 10 multiple-hit games and entered the week ranked third nationally in batting average, 27th in on base percentage and tied for 39th in stolen bases.
UCLA, along with Virginia Tech, are the only two teams to have a pair of players on the Top 25 list. On May 9, the current Top 25 list will be trimmed down to 10, with the Top 3 finalists announced on May 21. The Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented on May 28 at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. The NFCA FOY is in its sixth year. The Bruins had the winner in 2017 in current redshirt junior Rachel Garcia.
The Bruins open a three-game series at Oregon State on Thursday at 5 p.m. The game will air on Pac-12 Network Los Angeles.
