LOS ANGELES – UCLA junior right-hander Ryan Garcia has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Garcia is coming off a complete game two-hit shutout of Utah on Friday night, leading the Bruins to a series-opening 5-0 win. Top-ranked UCLA went on to sweep the Utes over the weekend, improving the team's record to 34-7.

The honor was the league-high third of the season for Garcia, who joins an exclusive club of Bruin pitchers. Garcia is just the fifth UCLA hurler ever and the first since Trevor Bauer in 2011 to pick up three Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors in one season.

Garcia allowed just three baserunners all game against Utah, none of which advanced past first base. In addition, he recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts, the most by a UCLA pitcher since Bauer against Fresno State on Jun. 4, 2011.

He started the game by retiring eight straight and ended it by sending down 11 consecutive batters. He needed just 108 pitches to finish the complete game shutout, UCLA's first since Griffin Canning on May 25, 2017.

The outing was the latest masterpiece in a standout junior season for Garcia. The Sierra Madre, Calif. native is 5-0 on the year, leads the Pac-12 with a 1.10 ERA (fourth nationally), and is third in the league with 69 strikeouts despite not making his first full start until Mar. 24.

Garcia previously picked up Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors after allowing one hit over 7 1/3 scoreless innings against Arizona on Mar. 24 and after striking out 13 batters in seven shutout innings against East Carolina University on Apr. 13. To this point of the season, no other league pitcher has more than one Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week accolade.

UCLA is next in action on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., traveling to Malibu for a midweek showdown with Pepperdine. That game kicks off a stretch that sees the Bruins play eight of nine on the road.
