UCLA head coach Carrie Forsyth has announced the addition of two incoming freshman, Emma Spitz (Vienna, Austria) and Yukino Yoshihara (Irvine, Calif.), who will start their Bruin careers this fall.
"Emma is one of the best players in Europe and has represented the Austrian National Team for many years," Forsyth said. "We are very fortunate to have her join our program next fall and we know that she will have an immediate impact on our team."
Spitz, currently ranked 19th in the Women's Amateur Golf Ranking, was invited to compete in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship, where she was able to be one of 30 players to tee it up at Augusta National. Spitz won the stroke play portion of the Girls' British Open Amateur by five shots, and would go on to win the 18-hole match play title to become the first Austrian to win the event. Spitz was a member of the 2018 European Junior Ryder Cup and 2017 European Junior Solheim Cup teams, and also earned a bronze medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. In 2019, she has won the Slovenian Amateur Championship and finished second at the Austrian Stroke Play Championship.
"Yuki has had a strong junior career, competing mostly locally, and this past summer she reached the round of 32 at the USGA Girls' Junior at Poppy Hills," Forsyth said. "Yuki will add depth to our team and has the potential to make our traveling roster during her career."
Yoshihara is a three-time Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player at Woodbridge High School. She became the first WHS girls golfer to win the Pacific Coast League individual title in 2018, winning by two shots. Yoshihara finished 11th at the 2019 Junior Orange Bowl International. She is the younger sister of Hidetoshi, who will be entering his senior season on the UCLA men's golf team this fall.
Spitz and Yoshihara join the threesome of Ty Akabane, Emilie Alba Paltrinieri and Annabel Wilson, who signed their National Letters of Intent last November.
