Women's Tennis Moves Into Round of 16

Seventh-seeded UCLA blanked LSU, will host Washington in third round Friday, May 10 (3 p.m., PT).

LOS ANGELES – The seventh-seeded UCLA women's tennis team defeated LSU 4-0 in the second round of NCAA Championships play Sunday at Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The win advanced the Bruins to the tournament's third round and another chance to host, which they will do as part of a new super regional format. Tenth-seeded Washington will visit LATC for the round-of-16 match on Friday, May 10 at 3 p.m., PT. The Huskies (21-4) swept a pair of home matches in the first and second rounds.

Jada Hart clinched Sunday's win on the top court, with Gabby Andrews and Elysia Bolton also notching singles victories for UCLA (20-7). A pair of doubles wins set the tone for the Bruins, who would never look back. With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 17-12.

Each of UCLA's tandems clung to a lead throughout the majority of doubles play. Eleventh-ranked Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart rebounded from its first loss since mid-March, dispatching of Paris Corley and Anna Loughlan by a score of 6-4. In a back-and-forth affair, the duos found themselves knotted at 4-4 before Bolton-Hart closed strong.

The pair of Andrews-Ayan Broomfield looked poised to lock up the doubles point on the top court, but No. 82 Abi Altick-Taylor Johnson snuck in to seal the deal on Court 3. The final three games came as a result of a broken serve, with Altick-Johnson completing the run for a 6-3 result. With the win, Altick-Johnson has won its last seven matches played together and holds an overall record of 11-1.

The Bruins kept momentum rolling into doubles play, where they captured five of six first sets. Broomfield would eventually answer the lone lost first set to split before not finishing.

Andrews continued her singles excellence of late, winning a sixth consecutive decision on Court 6. After dropping her first two games against Luba Vasilyuk, Andrews collected the rest of the 12 games to get the Bruins on the board in singles play.

No. 32 Bolton earned her 10th win of the year against a nationally-ranked opponent, dropping No. 60 Jessica Golovin with a 6-2, 6-3 showing on Court 2. The freshman got back to her winning ways after a pair of hard-fought losses, increasing her team-best win total to 26.

No. 45 Hart trailed 2-3 in her first set against No. 12 Richardson before answering with four of the next five games. The Bruin doubled up her opponent in the second to complete the win, which marked the highest-ranked triumph of her season.
