The Maxwell Football Club today announced that UCLA running back Joshua Kelley has been named to the watch list for the 83rd annual Maxwell Award.
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official.
Kelley ran for 1,243 yards in 2018, the 10th-most yards in school history. He totaled six 100-yard rushing games on the season (124-Colorado, 125-Washington, 157-Cal, 136-Arizona, 161-Oregon, 289-USC) highlighted by the 289-yard effort against the Trojans which was the most-ever by a running back in the rivalry series. Kelley ranked ninth in the NCAA in rushing yards/g (113.0) last season and was 18th in the NCAA in all-purpose yards/g (130.55). He was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection by the Associated Press and ESPN.com.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on October 29, while the three finalists for the award will be unveiled on November 25. The award winner will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 12. The formal presentation of the award will be held at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 13, 2020.
Kelley and the Bruins open the 2019 season on August 29 at Cincinnati (4 p.m. PT). The Bruins will play at home the next two Saturdays --- Sept. 7 vs. San Diego State at 1:15 p.m. ; Sept. 14 vs. Oklahoma at 5 p.m. For information regarding season tickets, visit uclabruins.com/tickets.
