The PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Wednesday that UCLA running back Joshua Kelley has been named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.
Kelley rushed for 1,243 yards in 2018, the 10th-highest total in school history. He racked up six 100-yard rushing games on the season (124-Colorado, 125-Washington, 157-Cal, 136-Arizona, 161-Oregon, 289-USC) highlighted by the 289-yard effort against the Trojans which was the most-ever by a running back in the rivalry series. Kelley rated ninth in the NCAA in rushing yards/g (113.0) last season and was 18th in the NCAA in all-purpose yards/g (130.55). He was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection by the Associated Press and ESPN.com.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced on November 20. The committee will cast a second vote, beginning December 2, to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives. The recipient of the 2019 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on the The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12 on ESPN.
The award, which will name its 30th recipient in 2019, honors SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate.
Kelley and the Bruins open the 2019 season on August 29 at Cincinnati (4 p.m. PT). The Bruins will play at home the next two Saturdays --- Sept. 7 vs. San Diego State at 1:15 p.m.; Sept. 14 vs. Oklahoma at 5 p.m. For information regarding season tickets, visit uclabruins.com/tickets.
