The UCLA women's swimming and diving team officially opens its 2019-20 season on Friday as they head to Sports Center Pool on the campus of the University of San Diego. The meet will also feature San Diego State.
Friday's meet is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start. Divers will not be competing.
The matchups marks the first official competition for UCLA under new head coach Jordan Wolfrum, who is beginning her first season at the helm of the program.
The Bruins' seventh head coach in program history and first new head coach in over 30 years, Wolfrum was most recently the associate head coach at Ohio State and also made coaching stops at Stanford and the College of Saint Benedict.
UCLA has a strong group of returns ready to see action for the first time on Friday, including 2019 NCAA qualifiers Kenisha Liu and Claire Grover. Other key returners include Maisie Jameson, Amy Okada, Delaney Smith, and Ella Kirschke.
The Bruins' class of incoming student-athletes – which was recently ranked No. 8 in the country – will see their first taste of collegiate action as well. Featured newcomers include Gabby Dang (Bothell, Wash.), Sophia Kosturos (Orinda, Calif.), Brooke Schaffer (Mountain View, Calif.), Rachel Rhee (Encinitas, Calif.), Daniella Hawkins (San Ramon, Calif.), and Lauryn Johnson (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).
UCLA swim fans can see the newest Bruins in action for the first time during Blue and Gold Meet Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 4-5. The weekend will consist of an intersquad meet at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 followed by a post-meet social that will both welcome new head coach Jordan Wolfrum and celebrate the career of the recently-retired Cyndi Gallagher.
