LOS ANGELES – UCLA sophomore goalkeeper Justin Garces has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, it was revealed by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

A Miami, Fla. native, Garces made a career-high seven saves in UCLA's season-opening 1-0 overtime win over Northwestern on Friday afternoon.

The Bruin backstop helped fend off a potent Wildcats' attack in the second half of that contest, making all seven of his stops during that period including five within the first 10 minutes of the half.

Garces was at his most impressive in the 47th, making back-to-back close-range saves on Bardia Kimiavi in rapid succession.

He also made a diving stop of a goal-bound drive to the bottom left corner by Matt Moderwell in the 53rd.

This is the second consecutive season that a Bruin has captured the league's weekly honor after the first weekend of the season (Matt Hundley, 2018).

UCLA returns to Wallis Annenberg Stadium this week for its first home games of the year, first hosting defending national champion and No. 3-ranked Maryland on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. That showdown will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
