No. 8 UCLA Punches Ticket to Indoors
January 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team posted its second 4-0 decision of ITA Kick-Off Weekend, blanking Loyola Marymount Sunday at Los Angeles Tennis Center to earn a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships field.
Freshman Taylor Johnson claimed her first dual-match singles victory in style, clinching the overall win. She was also part of the doubles team responsible for securing the doubles for the second straight day. Fellow freshman Elysia Bolton also starred for the second time in as many days, picking up wins across singles and doubles action. Senior Alaina Miller also improved to 2-0 on the singles side.
UCLA's No. 12-ranked team of Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart set the tone early in doubles play, seizing the first three games of the match. Playing together for the first time in a dual match, the pair went on to best Siobhan Anderson and Lillian Gabrielsen by a 6-1 score and give the Bruins an early edge.
While the tandem of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield did battle on the top court, another new pair of Abi Altick-Taylor Johnson got rolling on Court 3. Tied at two games apiece with Yesica de Lucas and Camila Tumosa, the Bruins started clicking on all cylinders. Altick-Johnson took the final four games of the match and cruised to UCLA's first point of the afternoon. It marked the second clinching doubles point in as many days for Johnson, who teamed with Alaina Miller to do the deed Saturday.
Five of six first sets went the way of UCLA and the three finishing courts wrapped almost simultaneously, with Broomfield just missing the cut on Court 3. Miller made quick work of Gabrielsen in her first set, posting a 6-0 showing on Court 6. The Lion made some noise in the second set, but came up short, 6-0, 6-3.
Bolton had some trouble with the veteran Voracek early, but eventually settled into her comfort zone and cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native did not surrender more than three games in a set over the weekend.
Johnson matched her classmate on the scoreboard, posting her own 6-3, 6-2 win on Court 5 to punch UCLA's ticket into the Indoors draw. The lefty's serve brought LMU's Camila Tumosa out wide, where she was unable to counter over the net.
Next up for UCLA is a Midwest road trip, with visits to Oklahoma State and Tulsa set for next weekend. The Bruins will visit the Cowgirls Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. (PT) and the Golden Hurricane Sunday, Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. The Indoors tournament will follow, with matches scheduled for Feb. 8-11 at the Seattle Tennis Club in Seattle.
