MVB Fells No. 7 Loyola in Four

January 31, 2019 | Men's Volleyball

No. 5 UCLA defeated No. 7 Loyola-Chicago in a non-league match played on Thursday night in Chicago. Scores of the contest were 29-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23. Daenan Gyimah tallied a season-best 18 kills while hitting .739 on the night to lead the Bruins. Micah Ma'a added eight kills, three aces, seven digs and three blocks. UCLA is now 7-2 on the season and will play at No. 10-ranked Lewis on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT. The Bruins return home next week to begin MPSF play against No. 8 Stanford and No. 3 BYU.

In set one, Loyola stormed out to a 0-6 advantage. UCLA closed to 7-11 after a kill from Daenan Gyimah. The Bruins trailed 13-19 before rallying behind the serve of Ma'a, who had three aces, during a 7-0 blitz. Back-to-back aces by Ma'a handed UCLA its first lead in the set at 20-19. After Loyola went back in front 22-23, Dylan Missry brought the Bruins square at 23-all. Each team then fought off set points, before a Missry ace and an Austin Matautia kill made it 29-27 UCLA. The Bruins hit .433 for the set.

Loyola moved to leads of 3-6 and 5-10 in the early stages of set two. The Bruins battled back to 10-13 after a kill from Brandon Rattray. UCLA pulled within two, at 16-18, on a Rattray swing down the line. The Ramblers regained momentum for a 20-24 edge. A kill by Missry and then an ace from Missry saved two set points. A Rattray blast made it 23-24, before Loyola put down a kill for the win.

Loyola broke out to an early lead of 3-5 before UCLA rallied to take a 9-7 edge. After the Ramblers went up 13-15, UCLA rattled off five straight points on Loyola errors to enjoy their largest lead of the night to that moment at 18-15. UCLA was up 22-20 before a kill from Grant Maleski and a block by Maleski / Ma'a / Missry pushed it to set point. After Loyola saved one point, Ma'a sent over a kill for the 25-21 win.

Set four was even at points four through 11. Loyola separated for leads of 13-15 and then 14-18. UCLA climbed right back into the set once again taking advantage of the serve of Ma'a who also added a couple of kills and an incredible dig during a stretch which pulled UCLA even at 20-all. With the score level at 22-each, UCLA used a kill by Rattray and a Loyola error to take the frame to set point. Loyola managed to save the first attempt at set point, but Rattray and Maleski teamed up for a block for match point.

UCLA outhit Loyola .407 to .243, but the home team won the serving battle nine to seven. The Bruins owned an advantage at the net to the tune of 8.5 to 7.0 total blocks. It was the fourth time this season the Bruins had reached the .400 mark in hitting percentage and the third time in the last four matches. Loyola was just the second team this season to out ace the Bruins.
