MVB Tops Tritons in Four Sets

January 05, 2019 | Men's Volleyball

The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team dealt UC San Diego of the Big West Conference a 3-1 setback in a non-league match played on Saturday night in the Wooden Center. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19.  Dylan Missry, who banged out eight kills in the opening set, finished with 16 to top the Bruins who are now 2-0 on the year. UCLA tied the school record with seven service aces in the second set, three coming from Micah Ma'a.

In set one, the Bruins broke an early 6-6 tie with a 6-2 streak which left them up 12-8. Missry had two kills and an ace during that stretch. UCSD cut the margin to one at 16-15, 18-17 and 20-19, but could not take the lead. Another Missry kill made it 21-19. Daenan Gyimah added a couple of aces to raise the gap to 24-20, before Missry delivered the set winner for a 25-20 decision. UCLA hit .476 for the set.

In the second set, UCLA blew out to an 8-1 lead after the second of back-to-back aces from Ma'a. UCSD sliced the lead to 12-8, before the Bruins went on another roll and took an 18-10 edge after the third ace of the set by Ma'a. The Bruins captured the set 25-13 after a set winner from the service line by Gyimah.

In set three, the Bruins moved out to leads of 9-6, 11-8 and 13-10. The Tritons fought back to even the score at 17-all. A couple of Missry swings put UCLA in front 21-20 and 22-21. UCLA's ninth service error of the set leveled the score at 22-all. A UCSD ace and a kill made it 22-24 and the Tritons took the set 23-25, despite UCLA outhitting the visitors .400 to .120 in the frame.

UCLA grabbed leads of 6-3, after a block by Gyimah, and 10-7, after a kill by Brandon Rattray. The Bruins then ran off seven of the next nine points to take control of the set. A Ma'a block made it 23-14 for the Bruins who came away with the win at 25-19. Gyimah totaled five kills and four blocks, including a career-tying two solos, for the set.

UCLA will swing back into action on Wednesday night with a match at CSUN before heading east to take on McKendree and Lindenwood of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) on Friday and Saturday. The Bruins will return home to play a non-league match with UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, Jan. 16 in Pauley Pavilion, presented by Wescom.
