MVB Drops First Match of Season

The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team dropped it first match of the season at No. 12 CSUN on Wednesday night in a non-league road battle in Northridge. Scores of the contest were 22-25, 16-25, 23-25. UCLA is now 2-1 on the year and will play next at McKendree University on Friday night. CSUN out hit the Bruins .417 to .200 on the night and won the fight at the net 7.5 blocks to 6.5. The Matadors also out aced the Bruins 4 to 2.
Set one was a hotly contested battle from start to finish. CSUN opened up a couple of two-point leads at 4-6 and 9-11. UCLA evened the score at 11-all after an ace by Micah Ma'a. The score was then level at points 12 through 18. A couple of Matador errors gave UCLA its biggest lead of the set at 20-18. CSUN then answered with three straight points for a 20-21 edge. A couple of kills by Brandon Rattray knotted the score at 21 and then 22 each. CSUN had the final answer as it tallied the last three points of the set on a kill, a net call and a Bruin error for a 22-25 win. UCLA hit just .115 for the set to .320 for the Matadors.
In set two, CSUN came out strong to take a 2-6 advantage. UCLA closed to 5-7 after a Ma'a kill. Back-to-back aces capped off a three-point run to put the Matadors up 5-10. A series of service errors by both teams left the score at 10-16. A pair of Austin Matautia kills made the score 11-16 and then 12-17. CSUN then began to separate and owned a 12-21 lead after their third ace of the set on the way to a 16-25 win. The home team hit .667 for the set with no errors on 15 swings. UCLA hit .231 with five errors and five service errors.
UCLA stormed out to a 4-1 lead to begin set three. CSUN closed to 5-4, but the Bruins regained the momentum to go up 11-6 after a pair of kills by Rattray. After UCLA had gone up 16-10, CSUN rattled off the next five points to fight their way back into the set. The Bruins kept the lead and went up 19-16 and 20-17 after kills by Matautia. The Matadors then answered with three straight to even the score at 20-all. UCLA went back up 21-20 and 23-22. CSUN tied it at 23-all after a Bruin service error and then tallied the next two points on a kill and a block to take the match.
UCLA's next home match is on Jan. 16 against No. 10 UC Santa Barbara.
