January 11, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team picked up a road win over McKendree University of the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) on Friday night in Lebanon, Ill. Junior middle Daenan Gyimah set a school record by hitting .917 for the match with 11 kills and no errors on 12 swings (previous mark of .900 and was held by multiple players – the last time by Allan Vince in 2005 vs. UC Irvine, minimum 10 attempts). Scores of the contest were 25-20, 29-27, 25-21. UCLA, now 3-1 on the year, returns to action tomorrow night at Lindenwood University (MIVA) in St. Charles, Mo. with first serve scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT.
In set one, UCLA moved to leads of 9-7, after an Austin Matautia kill, and 13-9, following a Gyimah ace. Brandon Rattray's kill pushed the Bruins into a 17-12 lead. A Gyimah kill made it 20-15 and another kill gave the Bruins the first set at 25-20. UCLA hit .636 for the frame, with Rattray leading the way with five kills.
Set two was a hotly contested battle from start to finish with each team earning multiple looks at set point. UCLA took a 7-5 lead after a block by Grant Maleski and Rattray. The Bruins still led 10-9 after a kill by Matautia. McKendree rallied to go in front 13-15. A Dylan Missry kill made it 14-15 and started a Bruin comeback. Rattray's swing lifted UCLA into a 20-19 lead. McKendree tied the score at 22-all and then went on to take a 23-24 lead. Another Missry kill fought off the set point. Missry's ace put the Bruins up 26-25, but McKendree answered to tie. Gyimah's fifth kill of the set broke a 27-all tie and Rattray's swing ended the set at 29-27.
In set three, a couple of Maleski kills tied the score at 5-all and then put UCLA up 7-5. McKendree came back to even the score at eight. A pair of Sam Kobrine kills broke a 14-all tie. UCLA extended the margin to 19-16 after a swing from Matautia. Another Kobrine blast went cross court to finish off the Bearcats at 25-21.
UCLA hit .475 for the match to .206 for McKendree. Rattray led the way with 13 kills (.421). Micah Ma'a handed out 45 set assists and paced the team with nine digs. Cole Pender slid into the starting lineup at libero and chipped in with four digs. Sam Kobrine came off the bench to deliver five kills. The Bruins recorded four aces to three for the Bearcats. However, McKendree won the battle at the net, 8.5 total blocks to 2.0.
The Bruins return home next week to host No. 10 UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday and No. 1 Long Beach State on Saturday night.
