LOS ANGELES – Seven members of the UCLA men's tennis team competed at tournaments over one full week in Santa Barbara, Calif. and Tulsa, Okla., as play wrapped Sunday.
Junior Keegan Smith turned in a pair of main-draw wins at the ITA All-American Championships in Oklahoma, where he was joined by debuting freshman Drew Baird. Meanwhile, back in California, Blaine redshirt freshman Blaine Hovenier led five Bruins at the UCSB Classic with his first-career wins.
Baird earned a spot in the qualifying draw of All-Americans, where he was matched up against Sam Felt of Gonzaga. The Bruin freshman pushed his veteran counterpart to the brink, but ultimately fell by a 7-5, 7-6(5) score at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
In the main draw, Smith cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory in his first-round match versus North Carolina's Simon Soendergaard. Then, in his second showdown of the season with 23rd-ranked Alex Brown of Illinois, No. 20 Smith repeated his first-round performance with another 6-2, 6-3 decision. Smith would bow out one round later, with No. 33 Alexandre Rotsaert of Stanford advancing in a walkover.
At UC Santa Barbara, Mathew Tsolakyan suffered a tough, three-set first-round loss to UCSB's Joseph Rotheram in the singles A Flight, but bounced back to defeat Cal Poly's Alex Stater, 6-4, 6-2.
The B Flight saw a resilient Bryce Pereira drop a close one to Fresno State's Johannes Seeman to open singles play before leaving with a 6-4, 6-2 victory versus a Pac-12 foe in Stanford's Tomas Kopczynski.
Hovenier, who did not participate in any matches during the 2018-19 campaign, had a debut to remember in the C Flight. The Los Angeles native dispatched of UCSB's Joshua Williams, 6-2, 6-4, and did not stop there. Hovenier pushed Oregon's Evan Felcher to three sets before falling, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, placing him in the third-place match. There, the Bruin went to three tiebreakers versus San Diego State's Rafael Gonzalez Almazan before prevailing, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 1-0(6).
In the Flight A doubles tournament, Pereira and Max Wild fell 8-6 to Stanford's Kopczynski and Filip Kolasinski, but charged back to reach the consolation final round with an 8-5 defeat of Jesper Klov-Nilsson and Charles Roberts of Oregon.
