UCLA (2-5, 2-2) hosts No. 24 Arizona State (5-2, 2-2) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Network. The Bruins own a 20-14-1 overall advantage in the series against Arizona State, which started in 1976, and has seen the teams battle each season since 2003.
Last season, Arizona State prevailed 31-28 in Tempe. The Sun Devils jumped out to a 10-7 lead before Darnay Holmes returned an interception for a touchdown to put the Bruins up 14-10. ASU tallied on a short pass play with just under a minute left in the half for a 17-14 lead at the break. The Sun Devils then went up 24-14 and 31-21 before UCLA rallied. Wilton Speight hit Caleb Wilson on a 10-yard scoring pass with 1:57 to play in the game to narrow the deficit to 31-28. The Bruin defense held on ASU's next possession, but the Bruins ran out of time on offense attempting to complete the comeback.
In the 2017 meeting between the teams played in the Rose Bowl, Josh Rosen threw for 381 yards and a touchdown. After ASU had jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the contest, Nate Meadors' 27-yard interception return put the Bruins on the board. It was followed up by a Rosen one-yard scoring plunge which evened the score. ASU rallied to take a 21-20 halftime edge. The Bruins outscored the Devils 14-3 to begin the second half. However, ASU tied the score at 34 following a blocked punt and return. Jordan Lasley hauled in a 22-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter to put UCLA up 41-34 and JJ Molson's third field goal of the game made it 44-34 with nine minutes to play. ASU managed a field goal down the stretch to put the final score at 44-37. Both teams produced over 500 yards of offense. Krys Barnes led UCLA with 14 tackles.
