UCLA Defeats Washington 1-0 on Late Reyes Goal
October 24, 2019 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES - In just her second game of the season after undergoing offseason knee surgery, sophomore Maricarmen Reyes scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lead No. 18 UCLA to a 1-0 victory over visiting Washington. Reyes' goal was her first of the year and fourth in her brief UCLA career.
Reyes' game-winner came shortly after a corner kick. The Bruins played it short, and after a few passes, the ball found its way to Ashley Sanchez just outside the box. Sanchez played it into Reyes, who volleyed it past Washington goalkeeper Siena Ruelas for the deciding goal at 86:47.
The Bruins (10-4-1, 4-3-0 in the Pac-12) and Huskies (9-4-2, 5-2-0) had been locked in a defensive struggle, with UCLA holding Washington to four shots, and Ruelas keeping the UCLA off the board with seven saves.
UCLA outshot Washington in the first half, 8-3, with three shots on target. Kennedy Faulknor had the Bruins' best chance in the half, striking a powerful shot in the 32nd minute that was saved by Ruelas. Bruin goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy had a big save of her own in the 22nd minute on a Summer Yates free kick that got between the wall.
Brzykcy finished the game with three saves while earning her second solo shutout of the season.
UCLA will next host No. 19 Washington State on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 12pm. The Bruins will honor seniors Chloe Castaneda, Sunny Dunphy, Jessie Fleming, Kaiya McCullough, Teagan Micah, Anika Rodriguez and Maki Umehara in pregame festivities.
