UCLA Football Defeats Arizona State, 42-32
October 26, 2019 | Football
The Bruins (3-5, 3-2 in the Pac-12) dominated from start to finish, carrying a 42-10 lead into the fourth quarter before the Sun Devils (5-3, 3-2) scored three late touchdowns with the game already out of reach. The win was the Bruins' second against a ranked opponent this year, marking the first time since 2015 that the Bruins have knocked off two ranked foes in a season.
"I'm proud of how our guys played," said head coach Chip Kelly. "It's still a really really young football team, but they've gotten better week by week and we'll continue to grow as a team."
Kelley became the first Bruin since Myles Jack in 2013 (vs. Washington) to score four rushing touchdowns in a game and only the 10th player in UCLA history to do so. The Bruins have now rushed for more than 200 yards in four straight games, with Kelley going over the 100-yard mark in the three of the last four contests.
"The offensive line was so amazing," said Kelley. "I can't do that without them."
Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns on an efficient 16-of-23 passing before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. Kyle Philips and Devin Asiasi each caught a touchdown pass for UCLA.
Stephan Blaylock led the UCLA defense with seven tackles and forced a fumble on Arizona State's opening drive that gave the Bruins the ball in Sun Devil territory—sparking the offensive onslaught to come. Kelley ripped off a 24-yard run to take the Bruins down to the five-yard line. Two plays later, he punched it into the end zone from one yard out to give the Bruins a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game
After Arizona State capitalized on a turnover of its own to even the score, the Bruins went back in front with a methodical 16-play 81-yard touchdown drive as the first quarter wound down. Big plays on third and fourth down were the story of the series. Chase Cota pulled in an acrobatic 21-yard catch on third-and-long, and Thompson-Robinson wove through the defense on a 20-yard scramble to convert another third down. With UCLA facing fourth-and-one at the Arizona State 22-yard line, Thompson-Robinson rolled right looking to pass but then pulled the ball down and beat the defense to the sticks to pick up a fresh set of downs. Kelley capped off the drive with three straight rushes—the last one a five-yard touchdown—to put the Bruins ahead 14-7.
UCLA added to its lead with another 16-play touchdown drive on its next possession. The Sun Devils looked to have stopped the Bruins on third down, but an ill-timed roughing the passer penalty kept the drive alive. Soon after, Kelley burst through a hole in the defense for his third score of the day to push the lead to 21-7.
The Bruins went 64 yards in only 38 seconds to tack on another touchdown just before halftime. Thompson-Robinson connected three times with Martell Irving before firing a perfect throw into the arms of Philips for a 20-yard score to make the score 28-7 heading into the break.
UCLA wasted no time adding to its lead after halftime, finding the end zone less than five minutes into the second half to increase the advantage to 35-7. On the biggest play of the drive, Thompson-Robinson evaded pressure and dumped the ball off to Ethan Fernea, who sped down the left sideline for a 29-yard gain to the Arizona State seven-yard line. A few plays later, Kelley powered across the goalline for his fourth touchdown.
The Sun Devils pulled three points back on a Cristian Zendejas field goal, but the Bruins soon found the end zone once again, this time on an eight-yard pass from Thompson-Robinson to Devin Asiasi to make the score 42-10. With the game out of reach, Arizona State scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to make the final score 42-32.
UCLA returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 2 against Colorado at the Rose Bowl. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
