Men's Tennis Wraps Fall Tournament Play

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA men's tennis team concluded its fall schedule at a pair of Southern California-area tournaments Saturday, with junior Keegan Smith taking part in the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships and a trio of Bruins playing at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships.
Smith earned a first-round win at the Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif. Senior Ben Goldberg was the top UCLA performer at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium, reaching the quarterfinal round of the singles draw.
The second-seeded Smith defeated Tin Chen of Louisville, 6-4, 6-0, to get his week underway. In the second round, though, he would run into a red-hot Richard Ciamarra of Notre Dame, ranked No. 43 in the nation. Smith took the first set from Ciamarra, but the Fighting Irish junior went on to a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win en route to the semifinal round.
Goldberg, sophomore Eric Hahn and redshirt junior Connor Rapp all took part in main-draw singles action in their final appearance of the fall. Goldberg beat Derek James of Biola in straight sets, Hahn edged Pepperdine's Robert Shelton in three sets and Rapp fell to 58th-ranked Bradley Frye of USC. Hahn's time would end one round later with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to top-seeded and 57th-ranked August Holmgren of San Diego. Goldberg notched a three-set win versus Adrian Oetzbach of Pepperdine to make the final eight, where he fell to Pac-12 foe Alejandro Reguant of Arizona.
In doubles play, Goldberg and Rapp teamed to defeat Jack Barnett and Matheus Ferreira Leite of BYU to reach the quarterfinal round of that draw, but was ousted there by Neel Rajesh and Sam Turchetta of Stanford.
