UCLA to Send Three to NCAA Cross Country Championships
November 16, 2019 | Cross Country
UCLA's Christina Rice, Colin Burke and Garrett Reynolds have qualified as individuals for the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, which will take place Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Rice finished in eighth place at the NCAA West Regional, clocking a time of 20:06.2 in the 6K race. The junior has led UCLA in all four meets in which she has participated this season. Her eighth-place finish at the Regional was the highest by a Bruin since Ashley Caldwell placed third in 2005. This will be Rice's first NCAA Cross Country Championship appearance.
Seniors Burke and Reynolds placed fifth and 11th, respectively, at the West Regional. Burke, who recorded a time of 29:58.5 on the 10K course, earned UCLA's best finish since Ferdinand Edman also placed fifth in 2016. Reynolds earned his highest Regional placement and second career Top 15 showing after finishing in a time of 30:01.9. This will be the third NCAA Championships for both Burke and Reynolds, who competed with the Bruin teams in 2016 and 2017.
Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in the Championship. The top two teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large. Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in each championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
Indiana State will host the NCAA Championships on Saturday, November 23, at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The women's 6K race will begin at 11:15am ET/8:15am PT, while the men's 10K race starts at 12:15pm ET/9:15am PT.
