UCLA Rolls to 5-0 NCAA Second Round Win Over Clemson

November 22, 2019 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 5-0 win over Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The No. 2 seed Bruins advance to the third round, where they will host No. 3 seed Wisconsin on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4pm.

Freshman Mia Fishel got the ball rolling for the Bruins in the fifth minute, combining with senior Chloe Castaneda on a give-and-go. Fishel headed the ball to Castaneda, who crossed back to Fishel in the box. Fishel finished with her left to beat Clemson goalkeeper Sandy MacIver for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Junior defender Lucy Parker doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a header off a set piece. Ashley Sanchez started the play by sending a free kick to Chloe Castaneda in the box. Castaneda headed it across to Parker, who popped it over a leaping MacIver for her fourth goal of the year. Six minutes later, Sanchez scored a goal of her own, hitting in a banger from outside the box.

Kali Trevithick recorded the Bruins' fourth goal of the half, scoring in the 42nd minute off a cross from Sunny Dunphy. UCLA outshot Clemson 9-1 in the first half, including a 7-1 shots on goal advantage.

Although Clemson outshot UCLA in the second half, it was only the Bruins who were able to get on the scoreboard. UCLA scored in the 75th minute on its second shot of the half, as Fishel recorded her second goal of the game, with Viviana Villacorta and Trevithick recording the assists.

Fishel's two goals led the Bruins, as she earned her third brace of the season. Sanchez had one goal and two assists, Trevithick recorded a goal and an assist, and Castaneda picked up two assists.

The Bruins (16-4-1) were able to empty their bench early, with a total of 20 players seeing action. UCLA senior goalkeeper Teagan Micah made four saves and earned the shutout, her eighth solo shutout of the year.

Sunday's third round matchup pits UCLA against Wisconsin (16-3-2) for the second time this season. The two teams met earlier in the year, on Sept. 14, with the Bruins taking a 1-0 victory at home.
