November 03, 2019 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA men's tennis team concluded play at a pair of tournaments Sunday, posting quarterfinal-round showings in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. and a final-round result in Las Vegas.
Senior Ben Goldberg and junior Connor Hance each reached the final eight of the Jack Kramer Club Collegiate Invitational singles tournament and teamed to make the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. Redshirt junior Connor Rapp and sophomore Max Wild, meanwhile, paired to reach the Larry Easley Memorial Classic final round.
Four Bruins notched second-round wins at the Kramer Club after earning first-round byes. Sophomore Eric Hahn dispatched of UC Santa Barbara's Alex Dominguez Soto in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while Goldberg, Hance and sophomore Patrick Zahraj went to third sets. Goldberg overcame a lost second-set tiebreaker to beat Nick Lagaev of Arizona, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, Hance edged USC's Rae Lan, 7-6, 2-6, 7-5, and Zahraj finished strong against Facundo Bermejo of New Mexico, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Hahn and Zahraj would bow out against ranked opponents one round later, but Goldberg and Hance kept rolling.
Goldberg surrendered just three total games versus San Diego's Nico Borter, 6-1, 6-2, while Hance nearly blanked Arizona's Hiroki Sakagawa, 6-1, 6-0. Their time in the singles draw ended one round later, though, as Hance dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Raul Dobai of New Mexico and Goldberg was edged by No. 55 Sean Hill of BYU, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.
The doubles competition saw Goldberg and Hance team up to beat David Ball and Vinivius Feijao Nogueira, 8-5, before falling short against Lagaev and Jared Horwood of Arizona by the same score.
In Las Vegas, Rapp got off to a strong start in the Flight One singles draw, beating Ignacio Martinez of San Diego State by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Rapp would go on to push host UNLV's Jordan Sauer, but fell in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 decision.
Redshirt freshman Blaine Hovenier turned in a quarterfinal-round singles win versus SMU's Jack Kite, 6-3, 7-5, before finishing on the wrong side of a 6-3, 6-4 score against UNLV's Zach Garner.
The combination Rapp and Wild got started in the quarterfinal round of the doubles draw, as it knocked off UNLV's duo of Jackson Atherton and Anton Ornberg, 8-5. Next up was Matthew Hollingworth and Vincent Rettke of Gonzaga, who fell to the Bruins by an 8-3 score. Rapp and Wild had their run stopped in the final, where they were bested by the 55th-ranked UNLV pairing of Sauer and Alex Kobert. The Rebels prevailed by an 8-4 score.
