Goulak, Vagramov Complete Bruin Sweep at Kramer
November 03, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. โ Just shy of two weeks removed from a UCLA women's tennis sweep at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, the Bruins pulled off the feat again at the Jack Kramer Club Collegiate Invitational.
Newcomers Annette Goulak and Sasha Vagramov were the stars of the weekend. Junior Goulak edged freshman Vagramov in the semifinal round on her way to singles title, then joined forces with her teammate for the doubles championship. Junior Abi Altick and sophomore Taylor Johnson also posted singles wins.
Johnson dominated her first-round singles match, earning a 6-0, 6-2 result versus Halla Alajeely of UC Irvine. Johnson would run into eventual finalist Anastasia Kharitonova of Baylor in the second round, however, where she fell in a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 decision. No. 70 Altick's first match of the draw ended in a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of UC Irvine's Jenna Schlatter, while Vagramov beat UCI's Stephanie Nguyen, 6-1, 6-3. Rounding out the second-round wins was Goulak's 6-2, 6-3 decision versus Shakhnoza Khatanova of UC Santa Barbara.
It would be more of the same for the remaining Bruin trio in the round of 16, as each player picked up another straight-set victory. Altick and Vagramov took on players from Pac-12 counterpart Arizona, beating Abby Amos, 6-2, 6-4, and Kirsten Prelle, 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Meanwhile, Goulak faced off against San Francisco's Emily Maxfield, who was dealt a 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
In the quarterfinal round, Altick took on a fellow ranked player in No. 100 Jessica Hinojosa of Baylor. The Bruin got off to a quick start, taking six of the first seven games and the first set. Hinojosa would bounce back, though, moving into the semifinals with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. Vagramov and Goulak would also encounter Baylor players, but they would not be slowed down. Vagramov delivered a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Paula Baranano, while Goulak held off Angelina Shakhraichuk, 6-4, 7-6.
An all-Bruin affair unfolded in the final four, where Goulak and Vagramov dueled for a spot in the final. The veteran ultimately prevailed, edging the first-year player in a first-set tiebreaker to set the tone. Goulak used the momentum en route to a 7-6, 6-4 victory.
Another Baylor opponent in Kharitonova would stand in the way of Goulak and her first singles title since joining UCLA. In the end, though, it was the Oak Park, Calif. native notching her fifth consecutive straight-set win, as Goulak lifted the trophy on the heels of a 7-5, 6-3 win.
In doubles play, Goulak and Vagramov started strong, bouncing Hailey McNall and Miah Webb of Marymount from the competition by an 8-1 score. The Bruins were tested by a pair of Baylor players the next time out, but ultimately came out on top of an 8-5 decision versus Baranano and Hinojosa. Goulak and Vagramov were too much for Khatamova and Juliana Valero of UCSB in the semifinals, taking eight of nine games. It was more of the same in the final, as the Bruins turned in a third 8-1 win, this time against Gitte Heynemans and Khim Iglupas of Arizona, to complete the sweep.
