LOS ANGELES – Four players scored in double figures as No. 11 UCLA breezed past Weber State by 40 on Tuesday night in the Bruins' 2019-20 season opener.
In her Bruin debut, Charisma Osborne led all scorers with 17 points, shooting 4-for-9 from the field, 3-for-7 from deep, and recording five rebounds and four assists. She played key in getting UCLA off to a hot start in its 85-45 triumph, scoring five early points.
Hours after being named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 30, Michaela Onyenwere lived up to the hype, scoring 16 points and grabbing six rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Lindsey Corsaro had 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting and Kiara Jefferson added 12 points.
In a career-high 29 minutes off the bench, Kayla Owens grabbed a career-best 13 boards to go along with six points. Making their UCLA debuts, Natalie Chou (nine points, eight rebounds) and Jaden Owens (seven points, four assists) also stepped up for the Bruins.
UCLA (1-0) started the game hot, using a 12-0 run and full-court press to stifle Weber State (0-1). UCLA's defense continued to be relentless, forcing 17 first-half turnovers and holding the Wildcats to just five field goals. After Weber State pulled to within 19 (44-25), the Bruins used an early timeout to regroup. The rest was history, as UCLA erupted for a 14-2 run and at one point made 12-straight buckets to go up 34 (69-35).
In the fourth quarter, UCLA extended its advantage to as many as 43 at the 6:54 mark of the stanza, as Jefferson knocked down a jumper off a feed from Kayla Owens to make it 78-35 Bruins, and Weber State never got closer than 37 the rest of the way.
